Book Blurb

On their first meeting, Varic Maedoc, prince of the vampyrs, told Jason Thorpe that loving him was not for the faint of heart. He wasn’t kidding. In the past two years, Jason has been kidnapped, lived through several attempts on his life, and foiled a coup. Now, his new life as the prince’s consort and adviser to the king is made even harder by Varic’s prolonged absence. With his prince off hunting down a traitor, Jason must fend for himself.

While the separation doesn’t last, even Varic’s return won’t stave off the wicked plotting of others, and Jason soon finds himself—again—fighting for his life while navigating ancient betrayals and revenge put in motion before he was even born. And he must prevail because his prince needs him to bring a place without honor back into his realm.

But what festers in rage and bitterness is something Jason never expected, and nothing he’s experienced in his human life, or in the decadent court of the king, could’ve prepared him for the wrath that’s about to be unleashed.

Varic needs both his crown and his consort to be the king he’s always wanted to be, and it’s up to Jason to make sure their bond never breaks.

Book Review

I feel as if I’ve waited an eon for the release of this final installment in the ‘House of Maedoc’ series by Mary Calmes. I’ve been chomping at the bit to return to the matan, his vampyr prince, and all of the secondary characters I’ve grown to adore. This finale is filled with mystical lore, psychopathic family members, and enough action and suspense to keep even my brain fixated. It’s a hell of a ride!

Unlike ‘His Prince’ which began at the end of ‘His Consort’, ‘His Realm’ picks up five months later and a lot has happened in those months. Jason is the king’s cadeyrn, or majordomo, in charge of all the work that has to be done in the palace and to the palace. Since it’s ancient and Jason is constantly surprised that chunks of it aren’t falling down all the time, well, it’s been busy. Unfortunately, since Varic, Hadrian, and Tiago have been gone all these months hunting down Alrek, Jason also has to be on hand for all the royal appearances and wrangling the king’s courtesans. Essentially, Jason is exhausted. When he stops an assassination attempt on the king, the vacation back to New Orleans that he was promised goes right out the window. Luckily for Jason, Varic is on his way home, having caught his half-brother, before the king can send Jason to Greenland.

Greenland, you say? What is in Greenland? Well, that would be the home of Decimus, the king’s uncle, who retreated there after the fall of the Roman Empire along with others who wanted someplace safe and stable. Picture in your mind an insular society with no interactions with others of their kind or the world in many centuries. Then remember how, and what, vampyrs feed off. Is it becoming clear? It was a horror show of mass proportions led by a complete psychopath and his sons. Of course, Jason was abducted. Again. There is betrayal galore and an exciting battle scene climax.

I’m not going into more detail as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. ‘His Realm’ is everything I hoped it would be. It’s filled with love, laughter, hijinks, snark, sarcasm, found family, sexy times, and all the things I expect in a Mary Calmes story. Now, would it be too much to ask for a novella featuring Zev? I really don’t think I’ve had enough of him. Please. *puppy eyes*

Thank you, Ms. Calmes, for bringing me joy with every book!
