Book Review

“Roses have thorns,’ we whine. When thorns of life entwine. Simple things can bring solace to heart-Things everyone take for granted-Like tending beds of fragile roses-with heart full of scars.” ― Val Uchendu

Nathan Marshall, of ‘The Fragile Heart’ by Jamie Lynn Miller, lost his heart when his partner, Mark, was killed in a car accident. Since Nathan was in a coma, he didn’t even get to attend Mark’s funeral. It’s been two years and Nathan is having a tough time moving on. One night he gives in and accepts a dinner invitation from two of his friends. When he meets their server, Justin, for the first time in a long time, Nathan can feel his heart beating again.

As Nathan and his friends leave, Justin gives Nathan a dessert while surreptitiously writing his phone number on the napkin. Nathan takes him up on his offer and calls Justin. They go out and have a great time but take their relationship almost painfully slow. Finally, they make it to bed. Justin is shy about getting undressed. When Nathan questions his hesitancy, Justin explains he had heart surgery and has scars. Justin explains he didn’t tell Nathan about his operation sooner because he didn’t want him to think he was fragile. Nathan scoffs at that idea, and they make love. Even though they take their time getting to know each other, the spark that should not be there, since they have known each other for such a short time, burns brightly. Nathan and Justin decide not to question this gift with which the universe has presented them.

Nathan realizes he hasn’t told Justin about Mark. The time never seemed right. When Justin sees a picture of Nathan and Mark in Nathan’s apartment, he makes an excuse and leaves, causing Nathan to wonder what could be wrong.

This a sweet, endearing story about love, mended hearts, and happy endings. Thanks, Jamie, for giving Nathan and Justin their happy ever after.
