Book Blurb

If Blain’s inner beast would just quit biting his rescuer, he might actually escape the death his mother has planned for him this Christmas.

Blain has never received a single kindness from his mother. Her hate for her own child has run deep, since Blain was born a shapeshifter in a society that has made it a mission to eradicate the impure shifter gene. When she signs his life away three days before Christmas knowing he is headed for certain death, Blain knows his only option is to run and hope for a Christmas miracle. He just never imagined his salvation would come in the form of Maggie and Azzy, a grandmother and grandson intergalactic smuggling duo. There is just one problem. Azzy’s scent drives Blain’s White Raccoon Dog self into a biting frenzy. If he can’t get his inner animal spirit under control, escaping his mother’s plans may be the least of his troubles. Azzy just might launch him out the airlock!

Book Review

‘Unwrapping His Mate’ takes place a few centuries after Earth’s ozone layer collapsed and a mass-evacuation took humankind to the stars. The story is set on planet Elcar, one where Christmas traditions are still alive and well. What the evacuees tried not to take with them was the ability to shift, except the gene has proven more stubborn than expected and the occasional shifter is born even after such a long time. The other issue humans battle with are the people living on Elcar – Lucretians – who treat them like cattle, and that is on a good day.

Blain is one of the ones cursed with being able to shift – into a Tanuki, a white raccoon dog – and as a consequence, his mother has mistreated him since he was a kid. The abuse takes both physical and emotional form, his brothers take part as well, and I was amazed that Blain was so determined to survive. Separated from his best friend just after they discovered feelings for each other when they were teenagers, Blain has been pretty alone on top of not being able to take a step without fearing punishment from whoever is closest. When he gets threatened with being sent to the Lucretian breeding sheds, he decides enough is enough and runs.

Azzy runs a spaceship with his grandmother, and when he finds what he thinks is a cute little dog, he takes it aboard. Imagine his surprise when he finds out the dog is a shifter – and the man he shifts into – eventually – is way more attractive than Azzy can resist. Add this to the time of year when Christmas is celebrated, and you end up with a very unusual mix of genres. As for the twist toward the end? It was as unexpected as it was brilliant!

If you like shifters in space, if you want to find out how a lonely and despised shifter finds his mate, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a quirky Christmas celebration at its center, then you will probably like this short story.
