When his three-year-old daughter is kidnapped, Eric Wilson doesn’t have many options, and time is running out. With nowhere else to turn, he reaches out to his ex, influential businessman Brock Vencenza, whose money and contacts might be able to save Josie.

Brock never got over Eric’s loss, and he’s more than willing to help when Eric needs him most. Together with law enforcement and private security, they embark on a twisting investigation to find the little girl—and who wants to hurt her and destroy both men in the process. Under the circumstances, confessing he still has feelings for Eric would be inappropriate, but Brock can’t deny what’s in his heart. He doesn’t know if their love can be rekindled or if he can even protect Eric and Josie. But one thing is certain: Brock’s determined to be the hero in reality that he is in Eric’s eyes.

Book Review

How to describe this novel? Spellbinding suspense intersperced with heart-wrenching romance might be the short version. Two men who still love each other but have been apart for nine years due to a lack of understanding and communication, a cruel threat to one of them when his daughter is kidnapped, and a mix of suspense and romance that had me on the edge of my seat might be the longer description. Add in a little girl who is too cute for words, and I was enchanted. Any way I look at it, ‘unlikely Hero’ is a fascinating story and I found it to be as captivating the second time around as it was when I devoured it in its first incarnation.

Eric is a dedicated teacher who wants a quiet life, is happy with the simpler things, and wants a family. His one true love has a different agenda, or so Eric believes, so Eric left him nine years ago because he was sure things would never work out with Brock. But it becomes obvious only a few pages into the book that Eric still loves Brock deeply, that he trusts the rich businessman more than his own family, and that – when disaster strikes – Brock is the only one whom Eric will trust to help. And boy, does Eric need help! His adopted three-year-old daughter, Josie, is kidnapped, he has no idea how to find the one hundred thousand dollars they want as ransom, and he is an emotional mess.

Brock is as cool and collected as they come, an extremely successful businessman, and still in love with Eric despite the fact that Eric left him. Brock never got over Eric, so when the man asks for his help, he doesn’t hesitate. But as events unfold, Brock discovers that there is a lot Eric has not told him. Brock also learns that a three-year-old has unknown powers – how else is he supposed to explain that she has him wrapped around her tiny fingers in no time flat?

The suspense of finding and dealing with the kidnappers, learning to live together and finding out the love they shared is still very much there, and figuring out who is behind the continuing threats to Eric keeps these two men extremely busy. As they slowly discover that they still want to be together and attempt to find out how that is supposed to work, their love grows back to its old strength before they can blink, and some very hot and loving interaction has them admitting that the attraction is still there. How to deal with the rest of their issues – well, you’re just going to have to buy and read this book to find out. It’s quite the journey!

If you like tension on multiple levels, if emotional and criminal drama working together to keep you in suspense are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as sweet and full of anticipation as it is exciting, then you will probably love this novel as much as I do. What a ride!
