Ambitious Daily Sentinel journalist Lauren King is chafing on LA’s vapid social circuit, reporting on glamorous A-list parties while sparring with her rival—the formidable, icy Catherine Ayers. Ayers is an ex-Washington political correspondent who suffered a humiliating fall from grace, and her acerbic, vicious tongue keeps everyone at bay. Everyone, that is, except knockabout Iowa girl King, who is undaunted, unimpressed and gives as good as she gets.
One night a curious story unfolds before their eyes: One business launch, 34 prostitutes and a pallet of missing pink champagne. Can the warring pair work together to unravel an incredible story? This is a lesbian fiction with more than a few mysterious twists.
A debut novel about investigative journalism written by seasoned award-winning journalist? That certainly piqued my interest. And my curiosity was instantly rewarded because ‘The Red Files‘ grabbed me from the very first page and I simply had to finish it...preferably right then. So let me start with saying kudos to Lee Winter for a complex, compelling thriller replete with three-letter agencies, conspiracies, cars racing through the night, attempted murder, and mayhem.
Winter certainly knows how to write and how to write a thriller that hooked me for good and took me on a roller coaster ride with twists and turns galore. I loved the quirky main characters, the caustic remarks by the ice queen, Lauren, who gives as good as she gets, her flamboyantly gay friend and neighbor next door, the guys in the news room. I could go on, you get the gist: Winter is a wordsmith who has her characters down pat. The dialogues are witty and had me chuckling many times (my wife loves it when that happens - extra brownie points for that).
There is a dose of romance as well that - rare for lesbian thrillers - in no way detracts from the thriller itself. The motto of the protagonists in ‘The Red Files’ is "the story comes first" and that is indeed true for the whole book. The romantic angle is a pleasant and pleasantly hot side dish to enhance the main course.
And without giving away too much the main plot is all too believable and if it hasn't happened yet, it could happen anytime. So kick back for a fast-paced political thriller with two courageous investigative journalists where the adrenaline constantly runs high.
