Second rule in this line of business: be careful who you kill....

My name’s Kate Kane. And right now, I don’t know which is more dangerous: my job, or my girlfriend. My job makes me the go-to girl for every supernatural mystery in London. My girlfriend’s an eight-hundred-year-old vampire prince. Honestly, I think it’s probably a tie.

A few weeks ago, I was hired for a simple missing person case. Next thing I know, I’m being arrested for murder, a vampire army is tearing up London, and even my dreams are out to get me. Something ancient, evil, and scary as hell is on the loose and looking for payback. The vampires are in chaos, the werewolves are culling everything, and the Witch Queen can’t protect everyone.

Which means it’s down to me. And all I’ve got to hold back the shadows is a stiff drink, a quirky sidekick, my creepy ex-boyfriend, and the woman who left me for a tech startup. It’s going to be another interesting day.

Book Review

This second Kate Kane novel is just fabulous and the series definitely has not lost its wondrously hysterical quality. This time round the lesbian paranormal investigator has a genuinely remarkable assistant, gets to stay above ground most of the time, but faces more than her share of murderous assaults on her being and necessary involvement in protecting London from utter and total devastation. She seems more in touch with her faerie inner nature and mother helping her to stay alive and defend a collection of entities that come under her safeguard. This group contains a curious number of ex-lovers, some needy souls, and personages whose loss would be sorely felt by many. I was quite delighted to notice, that a third Kate Kane book is more than just a wisp of an idea, <coming soon>, and I truly look forward to it. This is a must read for just about anyone who isn't opposed to lesbian leading women, a paranormal playground, or a male author. Simply fantastic!

Kate Kane currently lives with an animated statue...mmm...who is also her work assistant since Kate has confessed to having gotten her partner murdered. Her new bunk mate, Elise, is a tremendous complement to Kate's living and work environment, in my opinion. Kate still drinks, smokes, and dates an eight hundred-year-old vampire, displaying little consideration for doing anything that is really good for her well-being. She functions in a most presumptuous fashion, but her results upon final analysis generally end up in the plus column. I would unequivocally place my money on Kate. Some rather significant characters do the same, however, an near equivalent number are out to do Kate in. Incredible!

Elise is Kate's animated statue, work associate, and much more. She was payment from a crazy rat god inventor for some annoyingly vague information. This payment has paid dividends and then some. In addition, Elise was saved from the scrap heap and completely bonded with Kate. She is very talented and handles work and life details that Kate invariably fails to consider. This is a partnership made in heaven! Since Elise was only days old, so to speak, when Kate received her, I had the distinct pleasure of following Elise's early adaptation to life and times with Ms. Kane. Elise's sensitivities and twenty-four-hour on the job capabilities assist Kate in considerably more ways than could possibly have been initially anticipated. She also has acquired some quirky habits, preferences, and predilections that I believe must in some ways be attributed to her model human, Kate. She is and will be an ongoing asset for all future Kate Kane cases and escapades. Positively felicific!

Kate's first adventure was frankly incredible. ‘Shadows and Dreams’ tops book one and then some. Alexis Hall may be hard pressed to maintain this near vertical procession. I think he will be up to the task. This time I deliberately kept track of the epitaphs and there were eleven hilarious 'Here lies Kate Kane...Beloved daughter. Sorely missed.' Additionally,  we not only get to mingle again with some of the wonderful characters from ‘Iron and Velvet’, but a whole host of new folks and incredible situations making this three hundred and forty-six page book simply fly by. That is an exceptional compliment and I am pleased to make it. I am possibly being redundant, but it is necessary...I totally recommend this book to everyone. Brilliant!
