Secret agent and teenage computer genius Theo Reese lives in two separate worlds—and they’re about to collide.

Theo’s high school computer science club is gearing up for a competition, and Theo agrees to lend his knowledge of cybersecurity to help them win. The covert agency he works for also needs his talents. An encrypted key that allows access to the nation’s electrical grid has been stolen. Theo’s skills are crucial in its recovery before disaster strikes.

When the file shows up at the competition as one of those to be decoded, Theo must find a way to be both an average high school student and Winger, his secret identity. The file must be secured—all while protecting his teammates from those who will use any means necessary to get the file for themselves.

Book Review

‘Schooled’ is the very exciting and super suspenseful second story about Theo, a modern-day superhero with special “powers” around computers. And I think you should definitely read ‘Tracker Hacker’ first to get the full background. Theo is a talented teenager who follows some classes at MIT while still in high school. He is also a secret agent, working for TOS, the same organization as his secret agent parents. Theo tells the story in first person, and his way of talking and thinking is very much like that of a teenager, adding to the ambiance of what happens – and it’s a lot!

The conflict between Theo’s life as a high school student and that of a secret agent which began in the first book escalates in this second volume, and Theo has to face decisions way beyond what peers at his age have to deal with. But since he is talented and dedicated, it is easy to forget how young he is. I liked that everyone (in the end) takes into account his age and teaches him to do the same without shame. It increases his maturity while at the same time allowing him to enjoy the distractions of youth, like goofing off with friends and spending time with his boyfriend, Eddie.

Then there is a major plot around a stolen encrypted file, its decryption, and the villains who are after the results and show no mercy. It all starts out seemingly harmlessly with a competition between high schools, but events quickly escalate and it becomes clear that Theo and his team have ended up right in the middle of international espionage and data theft. Very cool! I enjoyed the technical details – they were detailed without being boring, and the developments were well paced to keep me interested and turning the pages.

If you like mysteries, thrillers, and spy stories, if following a teenager on his journey of professional and personal growth is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is suspenseful, entertaining, and very up-to-date technologically speaking, then you will probably enjoy this novel.
