Working on Christmas Eve—no fun. Working a double shift on Christmas Eve? Even less fun. But working a double shift on Christmas Eve in a hotel with two guests? For Jason Martin, it was a recipe for a long, dull holiday. But then a power outage at the local airport sends a bus filled with people to Jason’s hotel. Alone, Jason not only has to attend to his guests, he has to save Christmas for a group of weary and grouchy travelers. Happily, one of the guests, a Mr. Marino, steps in to lend Jason a hand. Mr. Marino is helpful, handsome, and running right to the top of Jason’s Christmas wish list. But Jason has sworn off hotel hook-ups. And Mr. Marino will be heading out of town the next day, Christmas day. Is it worth getting involved with someone who is only staying for one night?

Book Review

What a delightful story to mark my personal beginning to this year’s Holiday reading season! The title is a nice play on words/reference to the first Christian Christmas where Mary and Joseph did not find room at any inn in Bethlehem, and ended up in a stable. Contrary to their situation, this story is all about the night manager of a modern-day inn that is empty with no reservations and arrivals of guests to look forward to. Jason fully expects to be bored out of his mind working the double shift he agreed to so that others can have Christmas with their families... but that is not at all what happens. As it turns out, the powers that be have other plans, unexpected things happen, and Jason ends up having an extremely hot encounter with surprising consequences.

Jason has no trouble working hard, and is glad he got a full-time job after graduating from college. But the prospect of being bored out of his skull due to the lack of guests does have him worried. He knows why he is making the sacrifice, since his family is out of town and he has nobody special to share the holiday with, but still. Just when he is about to be depressed things begin to change and he ends up with more work than he thinks he can handle.

The various guests trundling in for a range of reasons and the drama they bring had the potential of making everything go south for Jason – and then some. But his creativity in coming up with solutions and his dedication to making Christmas happen for them no matter what, quickly had me entertained rather than worried for Jason’s sake. And with the mysterious Mr. Marino on the scene to help, then propose a hookup…. Let me just say that I really, really enjoyed where the author took this tale.

If you like your Christmas stories sweet and hot, if a bit of drama and worry before the happy ending is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is entertaining, romantic, full of passion, and with a wonderful twist at the end to make it all even better, then you will probably like this short novella as much as I do. I think it’s enchanting.
