Book Blurb

After Andy Lapin’s brother falsely accused him of theft, he was taken away to do his time. Luckily, the crime is petty, and he can get out by selling himself to an alpha who needs a temporary mate for breeding. The only problem is that he actually has no choice in the matter, and the alpha is already here to collect what’s his.

Istvaughn Kristoff is at an age where he should be producing pups, heirs who will take over the pack when he’s gone, and he needs a human to drink his blood and act as his mate so he can get them. Only humans can carry shifter babies, but the problem is they often die when doing so. Still, Vaughn is willing to pay good money for Andy to take the risk, even if Vaughn is risking that his children end up with terrible red hair.

What he doesn’t expect is the instant attraction that hits him—or wanting this human so badly.

But surely it’s just a normal attraction. He can’t possibly have a natural mating with this human…could he?

Book Review

I'll admit honestly that Marcy Jacks is a guilty pleasure, so when a new series comes out that involves shifters, humans, and mpreg, well I'm jumping all over that. I always enjoy the world created and I was particularly intrigued with this one as only humans can have the shifter babies, although it's apparently very dangerous, and the humans often don't survive. Before I'd even opened this novella, I was rooting for Andy and wanted him to get his happy ever after.

A world where wolves live among humans, in fact the wolves need the humans to bear their young, but the wolves pay very handsomely for this service, and if the human survives the birth, then the mating is dissolved, the human gets a load of money, the alpha has his heir(s) and the alpha can then mate with another shifter. This was why Vaughn picked Andy. Vaughn doesn't like redheads and the risk of Vaughn falling in love is low, so if Andy dies while giving birth, Vaughn won't be too upset about it. A very harsh way to look at it, but since one in three humans die during birth, a very practical outlook.

Andy and Vaughn have some explosive chemistry together, and that's before Andy drinks Vaughn's blood, which is how these shifters mate in this world. Not a natural, true mating, but definitely a mating, one intended for reproduction. Oh, how I adored Andy's snarky little comments. He is more than capable of keeping Vaughn on his toes… and, ripping his hair out. *grins* Andy isn't too thrilled when he gets to Vaughn's home (palace) only to discover there's some sibling rivalry with Vaughn's younger brother. Andy doesn't want to walk on eggshells for the time he is there. I was very sad, right along with Andy, to discover that if he lives through the birth, he will get no rights to these children. He won't be able to see them or interact with them. This is how it is in this world.

I so enjoyed this first novella in the series. Andy and Vaughn are absolutely wonderful together and I had more fun than I thought I would. I almost cried when the ending unfolded, it was so touching. I'm so looking forward to more stories in this world.
