Book Blurb

An outbreak of demon attacks across Charleston has worn SPECTR agent John Starkweather to the bone. Now a new threat faces his team: a demon with bullet—and bite—proof skin, which can’t be stopped by ordinary means.

John’s only solace comes in the form of his lovers: Caleb Jansen and the vampire spirit Gray. Caleb and Gray have their own problems, however. Unbeknownst to John, they’ve been tracking a mysterious entity across the city. And after they finally come face to face with their quarry, nothing will ever be the same.

Book Review

The gnawing on my lower lip has gotten so bad waiting for this third novella in the SPECTR 2 series by Jordan L. Hawk that I look like I'm ready to play a ghoul at Halloween. I'm not exaggerating. It has been over a year since the last release and I've been getting more and more antsy. I know the author is very busy but I've had a longstanding love affair with Caleb/Gray and John. This series can't be beat on sheer originality and dialogue, alone!

“I would eat them.” (Gray)
Because that’s your answer to everything. (Caleb)
“I do not believe in needless complications.” (Gray)

At the end of the previous installment, the author had me all a-twitter because it appeared someone, or something, was stalking Caleb/Gray. It did not surprise me in the least that these two in one (ha!) were getting a jump on tracking this thing down. All without telling John, of course. However, that I couldn't blame them for, because John is still such a Boy Scout and he would insist on filing a SPECTR report, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The team gets assigned a new case and Zahira identifies the NHE as a grendel, which Caleb thought only existed in Beowulf. Nope. This is one nasty who eats its victims while they're still alive. Now the team just has to figure out who summoned it and stop it. And to get to the bottom of the ties between the victims and the college. Someone with money might just be hiding something. Just another day in Charleston, right? Well, it would be if the non-demon thing Caleb/Gray had been searching for didn't appear and turn out to be something from Gray's long, long, long, ago past.

Oh my. I had no idea where the author was going to take me on this latest journey. There's way too much spoiler-y stuff for me to share, so I'm just going to say this: John and Caleb/Gray have a very difficult road ahead of them, both personally and professionally. If they survive it they might just make it, but I'm very worried about what else is in store for them.
