Days ago, with the help of his living sword Ciarrah, Lucky fought through an army of wraiths led by the undead horror that was once his mother. Though he’s seen more bloodshed in his short life than many seasoned warriors, his destiny as the chosen Sun Child of the magical world called Ethra demands more. Otherworldly enemies are regrouping, barely fazed by a single defeat. If they won’t rest, then neither can he.
He travels to the capital city with ancient wizard Thurlock, but instead of allies, he meets open betrayal. An old friend of Thurlock’s and some young supporters boost his morale, but how much help will they offer against zombies, dragons, and evil magic users? In the epic battle looming on the horizon, everything he’s gathered, from mystical tools to a winged horse, a loyal dog, shifter and dragon allies, and even an army at his side might not be enough. Will he measure up to fate’s challenge… or be trampled by it?
“Your job as a leader is to tap into the power of that higher purpose—and you can’t do it by retreating to the analytical. If you want to lead, have the courage to do it from the heart.” ~ Lead from the Heart, Gail McGovern
Lucky, of ‘Dragon’s Rise’ by Lou Hoffmann, has had many challenges in his young life, but the biggest one is yet to come. There’s an evil poisoning the land that threatens to destroy everything. With the threat of war on the horizon, Thurlock and Lucky travel to seek allies, but, as usual, nothing in Lucky’s life goes as planned. What is supposed to be a visit to the capital, in order to drum up support for the eminent battle that looms on the horizon, turns out to be a lot more challenging that he and Thurlock thought it would be.
Thurlock leaves Han in charge while he and Lucky are traveling. Han hates dealing with the administrative, day-to-day dealings of the Sisterhold, but does the best he can. Being a soldier, he is much more comfortable managing military things. Right now, recruitment, from anywhere he can get it, is a main priority. As time goes on, reconnaissance mission reports become more ominous; enemy troops are growing larger and more menacing. As much as Han hates the thought of it, war seems unavoidable. Besides that, his lover, Henry, is there, but their duties must come first, so they can’t be together the way both wish they could which is hard on both of them. As difficult as it is, Han knows he must keep his mind on the task at hand and off Henry.
By the time Lucky and Thurlock arrive at the capital, the first thing they have to do is report to the council to inform them of the drastic measures Thurlock had to take in order to save their lives. The council is ominous, but, after serious consideration, rule that Thurlock was justified in his actions. During their journey, they are met with several frightening encounters; as harrowing as they are, many solutions demonstrate the yet untapped potential that Lucky possesses, making him more powerful than even Thurlock expects. As the proclaimed Sun Child, they will be indispensable. Thurlock’s ongoing regret is that Lucky has to learn such harsh lessons while he is still so young. Still, he is going to teach Lucky everything he can before that time.
As the series goes on, I continue to be enthralled by the descriptions of Ethra, all the mystical elements, and both brave and scary characters, presented in such vivid detail. It’s almost like being there, which is, at times, a very scary thought. My affection and respect for Lucky, Thurlock, and Han continues to grow. Thanks, Lou, for the ongoing surreal experience.
