Despite the best-laid plans, life sometimes has other ideas.

Ethan Yoder has toiled to escape his small-minded farming community, and he’s finally earned his degree and made it to Indianapolis—where he lands a job at a pharmaceutical company and meets handsome and successful Marcus. Marcus introduces Ethan to the fun-filled life of his dreams—fancy dinners, courtside seats at NBA games, even a trip to the Indianapolis 500. But Marcus’s happy-go-lucky veneer hides a man frustrated with a job he hates and his failure at romance due to factors he’s only beginning to understand. Ethan still has his eyes on the prize—a lucrative career—and he must figure out how to hold on to one opportunity without letting another slip away. If he and Marcus can come to a deeper understanding, their road might lead to a happily ever after.

States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

Book Review

Indiana is not a state I have visited, but this novella gave me a good feel for what it’s like. From Ethan’s small-town farming life to his venture in “the big city”, Indianapolis, where he meets Marcus, the setting felt very real to me. But setting is not all this book is about – at its center is the inner battle of two men between what they currently have and what they really want. It takes them a while to get to the point where they can open up and be honest – with themselves and each other – and their journey is as obstacle ridden as it is fascinating.

Ethan was outed by a classmate when he was in tenth grade, and has had to live with everyone not talking about his “issues” and not being able to be true to himself until the end of college (which was local enough that he still lived at home). Ethan is ready to experience everything the big city has to offer, but has a hard time changing his attitude and behavior. When he meets Marcus he is intrigued, and figuring out how they fit together may be more difficult than he expected, but being Ethan, he does not shy away from a challenge.

Marcus is living his life to the fullest – or so it seems. He has a good job and a great car, but his focus is his social life with his buddies, college roommates one and all. His weekends are sacred, and, unlike his peers, he does not work overtime without a reason. He is an adventurer at heart and wants to try different things, but he is not a risk taker. Initially I didn’t understand why he acts that way, but as I got to know him better and found out more about him, it all began to make sense.

The title of this novella is very apt: both main characters find themselves at a crossroads in their lives. Ethan did not expect another one so soon after he finally made it out of the small town of his childhood. Marcus is too busy to think about his priorities until he meets Ethan, which triggers Marcus beginning to deal with his issues around romance while he also has to admit that he is really fed up with his job. I felt for both of them: Ethan has worked incredibly hard and sacrificed so much to finally be free to be who he is, and Marcus has tried to lead a life following everyone else’s ideas about what sex should be like. It’s very fortunate that they can help each other!

If you like complicated, multilayered characters, if you want to watch a somewhat unusual romance evolve before your eyes, and if you’re looking for a read that explores the psychological as well as the emotional aspects of a new relationship, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. In my experience it is rare to find a shorter book with this much depth, but ‘Crossroads’ is more like a novel in terms of complexity and intensity. I loved it.
