Book Blurb

Once upon a time, a prince lived in a magical kingdom called Turquoise, New Mexico.

Well, really, TJ is a small-town police chief. Every Friday he holds court in the diner with the local holy roller, the art colonists, and the horsey people. But the Benes, who own the rodeo company, keep to themselves. TJ knows, because he was once hot and heavy with the oldest Bene son.

When Wacey Bene gets trampled by a remuda and comes home to heal, he’s none too happy to run into TJ, or his two little boys and their momma. The story might end there—if it wasn’t for some pesky bastard trying to kill Wacey.

The law steps in, and the townsfolk are cross about somebody messing with one of their own.

But once the bad guy is put away, can TJ and Wacey make their place in this wild and eccentric town a permanent one?

Book Review

Small-town communities and how they handle things are very different from how stuff is done in cities, and Turquoise, New Mexico, is a prime example of some of the eccentricities that are perfectly normal for a close-knit community. From the varied, quirky characters and their behaviors to the beautiful setting, and from the events to the way people deal with stress, ‘Cowboy in the Crosshairs’ took me to a different world with entirely different rules. I loved TJ, the police chief, and Wacey, oldest son of the rodeo family in town. The highly colorful characters added to my enjoyment, all the gossip kept me entertained, and the mystery around who was out to kill Wacey added a nice touch of suspense.

TJ loves his job, even though the height of excitement is usually some neighbor complaining about another for a very minor infraction. He loves the gossip, he loves knowing pretty much everyone in town, and it’s a great place to raise his two young sons. He gets along with his ex-wife, but the “normal” life he wanted (and the reason he rejected Wacey so many years ago) just didn’t happen. Now Wacey is back and TJ is constantly reminded of what he lost. TJ has no clue how to get it back and doesn’t even think it’s possible. But then it becomes clear that someone is after Wacey, and all bets are off.

Wacey is in excruciating pain after his accident, he doesn’t want to face his family (not even on a good day), and he knows he’ll have to stay home at the family ranch for weeks and weeks. Not a good way to come back to the place he ran away from when he was a teenager. Between his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and various siblings and their kids there is no shortage of meddlers. They all mean well, they know Wacey is gay, and yet… Wacey is not used to sharing everything with so many people who know him well and want to help. And he has no intention of making up with TJ!

TJ and Wacey have history, and it’s not all roses and moonshine. They have not seen each other for ten years, the resentment toward what happened is still high, the fact that TJ has kids and gets along with his ex is irritating Wacey, and I think that the threat to Wacey’s life is about the only thing that could have gotten them back together again. Even so, it’s neither easy nor straightforward, and both men have to overcome more than one obstacle. Once they do? Hold on to your hats, because they definitely burn up the sheets together.

If you like cowboys in trouble who need to be rescued by intrepid police chiefs, if a prickly new beginning to a love affair that should never have been interrupted is your thing, and if you’re looking for a very entertaining read that is as funny as it is suspenseful, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. May there be many more in this series!
