Book Blurb

Spending an unexpected holiday break alone following his parents’ sudden death, thirty-something lawyer Zane Anders attends to unfinished business: getting his parents’ dilapidated Cape Cod cottage ready to sell and retrieving a mysterious Christmas present Zane’s mother left behind. But an acquaintance from the past interrupts his solitude at the beach. Christopher DeVries has morphed awfully fast from the awkward, infatuated teenager Zane remembers to a handsome college senior living next door. He’s still too young for Zane. Although he’s remarkably mature…and beguiling.

Deterred by their age difference, Zane hesitates to make the first move. But when a fierce Nor’easter closes highways and paralyzes the Cape, both Zane’s and Christopher’s Christmas plans are rewritten.

So what if winter isn’t beach weather?

Book Review

Christmas at the beach is not a much-used setting, but I liked the way this author pulled it off. Between Zane’s memories and dealing with the loss of his parents, Christopher’s youthful exuberance, and them being “stranded” in the neighboring Cape Cod cottages their families have owned, there is quite a lot happening. Mostly discussions and realizations rather than “action”, but if you’re looking for a quiet Christmas story this might just fit the bill.

Zane is an extremely successful lawyer - in fact he has just ben made partner at the tender age of thirty-one. But he has no social or personal life to speak of, has recently lost his parents, and is in dire need of a break. Even though it is winter, he decides to spend his time off in his family’s – now his – cottage since his mother left him his Christmas present there. His fumbling with the somewhat primitive amenities in the cottage were very amusing, and his gradual adjustment to a slower pace not all that easy.

The one thing that surprises Zane is his attraction to the much younger Christopher. He had last seen the guy when he was fifteen, and boy, has he changed. The attraction sizzles, but Zane is skeptical about the nine-year age gap. The common interests they discover as well as Christopher’s maturity surprise Zane – in a good way.

If you like the idea of Christmas on a very cold and windy beach, if you think age differences are overrated, and if you’re looking for a read that is a wonderful portrait of two men discovering they have much more in common than either of them thought when they first begin to reacquaint themselves with each other, then you might like this novella.
