Could this be a Christmas miracle or disaster?

Jiraiya had no desire to be a part of the Christmas season. He planned to do his job and protect his people from the monsters that lived across the border. The last thing that he expected was to have a monster fly into his arms or the feelings that would come with it. Now, Jiraiya must decide if the monster that declares a soul binding connection to him is a Christmas miracle or a disaster. Does love stand a chance for two enemies even around this magical time of the year?

Book Review

What better time of the year than Christmas for enemies to become lovers? With all the Christmas spirit around it should be easy right? Well, in Jiraiya and Reeve’s case, I was definitely wrong to make that assumption. Not that it mattered much – reading about all the details of how they meet and get to know each other as they overcome quite a few obstacles was a very amusing way to pass the time.

Jiraiya lives in a village surrounded by forest, and, ever since he was old enough to understand, he has been told to be careful of the monsters hiding among the trees. Like all young men in his village, Jiraiya becomes a guard when he is eighteen and is expected to protect the others by killing any monsters that show up. But when the time comes one Christmas Eve and Jiraiya has a choice, he ends up saving the monster’s life instead of killing it, and having to figure out how to deal with the consequences. They are not at all what he expects, there is far more to deal with than he suspected and that makes it even more difficult for him to decide what to do.

This story, told in alternating first person, is set in a fairy-tale-like environment, but the main character’s dilemma is very real. How can he fight what he has been taught and all the prejudice that goes with it when all he ever knew was the village’s side of the story? I loved watching Jiraiya figure things out and grow into an independent adult while he did it. But seeing things from Reeve’s side was equally interesting, not that I can say much more without spoiling the surprise. Suffice it to say that there truly are two sides to every story, and ‘Christmas with a Demon’ is a great example.

If you want to read a Christmas story of an entirely different kind yet still imbued with Christmas spirit, if enemies-to-lovers stories are your thing, and if you’re looking for a slightly mysterious read set in a fantastical, pretty unique world, then you will probably like this short story.
