Author's Interview

Let's start with you telling us a little bit about yourself, Lucinda.
I live in a small village in the English countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, cows and sheep. I started writing to fill time between jobs and am now firmly and unashamedly addicted.

I love the English weather, especially the rain, and adore a thunderstorm. I love good food, warm company, and a crackling fire. I'm fascinated by the psychology of relationships, especially between men, and my stories contain some subtle (and some not so subtle) leanings towards BDSM.

When did you start writing, is it something you've always been interested in, or did it develop later in life?
I’ve always had an interest. I think my career ambition as a teenager was to sit in a cottage by the sea and bash away on a typewriter (showing my age there!). I dabbled a bit for fun but didn’t take it seriously until a few years ago. I wrote on free sites and had no idea that what I wrote would be anywhere near good enough to publish. People reading my stories pushed me to submit something and the rest is history.

Has it been everything you thought it would be or not?
Writing is much harder work than it might appear. It takes a lot of hours, which I have to fit in around a full time job and family. I love it though and couldn’t give it up now. I need to get all those chattering characters out of my head and on to paper.

How did it feel when you realized that your very first book was going to be published?
I felt sick. Genuine gut-wrenching nausea, followed by the assumption that someone had made a mistake. When it turned out to be true, the jubilation was tempered by terror and absolute certainty that no-one would like a word of it.

What's your favorite part of writing a book?
The point at which the plot is clear in my head and the words flow on to the paper. Usually somewhere past the halfway mark when characters start to be more cooperative and missing pieces begin to slot into place. Of course, writing The End comes a close second!

Are there any other genres you'd be interested in writing?
Urban fantasy perhaps or a really dark thriller. I don’t have the patience for historical research and I can’t imagine writing horror. A little bit of me has a secret craving for science fiction as well.

Please tell us a little about your most recent release.
Rough Around the Edges is the fifth book in the Tales from the Edge series. There are lots of recurring characters, but this book focuses on Kai and Harry who appeared for the first time in book #3, Dancing on the Edge.

What can we look forward to in the future from you?
Well, there will be a series of short biker stories about the characters that were introduced in Mantrap, from the Hard Riders anthology. Another Edge story later in the year and I’m also working on the full length follow up to Picturing Lysander for the What’s His Passion imprint.

Anything you want to say to your readers?
A huge thank you for reading, commenting, reviewing and emailing. I really appreciate the time and effort that people make each time they comment on my blog, retweet a message or write a review. I love how attached they get to my characters – they seem to love them just as much as I do.

Can a new beginning be found in leather and chains?

Kai Smithson’s life changes dramatically with his first glimpse into the world of BDSM. Completely innocent, Kai can hardly believe his eyes, but he knows what he likes and apparently that’s hot, dominant men in leather. He isn’t sure if he’s a submissive because he doesn’t really know what that means, but the feelings he is experiencing are exciting and new.

Harry Croft, bar manager at The Underground BDSM Club, believes in insta-lust rather than love at first sight. And when he agrees to train Kai, the contract between them has one condition—no sex. But Kai has some very definite plans about losing his virginity and a piece of paper is not going to stand in his way. In his new friends at the club and at The Edge, Kai has a ready-made support group of subs that show him that the only rules in a D/s relationship are those he wants to make for himself.

The old saying that you can choose your friends but not your family is proved horribly true for Kai, as the mysteries of his past are revealed. As he and Harry start out on their journey together, they must contend with bullets as well as bondage, danger alongside domination, and it’s not easy to establish trust when the whole world is going to hell.

Reader Advisory: This book contains characters who have extremely prejudiced views and scenes referencing physical abuse.

Publisher's Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series.

Rasputin’s Kiss

What if the last thing you felt was the kiss of a knife?

Rasputin’s kiss is lethal. He’s a ghost—killing and disappearing into the night. With few leads and four bodies on his conscience, Detective Inspector Alex Courtney and his team are running on empty and it’s only a matter of time before Rasputin strikes again.

When Alex recruits a young detective to play the part of his boyfriend and provide a tempting target for a killer, he knows he is taking a huge risk. He doesn’t expect Conor Trethuan to be a perfect potential submissive. When their mutual attraction becomes more, Alex has to face the conflict between his possessive instincts and the need to push his young lover into danger.

Investigating their feelings has to come second to investigating the case. There’s no time to decide if what they feel for each other is real. With Rasputin closing in, they may not live to find out.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of mild BDSM.

Publisher's Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Mantrap

Not all cages have bars.

The Wyverns Motorcycle Club has a reputation as fierce as its dragon emblem. Its enigmatic leader, Rogue Hellaby, has a police file so thick you could prop up a table with it. The qualifications for membership are a reckless disregard for authority and the attitude of a spitting cobra. But The Wyverns MC is not quite what it seems. All the riders have dubious histories in the military or the police—now they just serve and protect their own interests and those of Horatio Trap, the manipulative bastard who recruited them.

When Rogue receives an instruction to kidnap and hold hostage the son of a powerful drug lord, he doesn’t bat an eyelid. But Rogue has never had to deal with a captive like Orlando de la Pena. Orlando is furious—not because he’s being held prisoner, but because he’s prevented from partying at his favorite BDSM club. Rogue discovers that the only way to deal with Orlando is to become the Dom he so obviously needs. But Orlando’s father wants him back, and The Wyverns must face a battle that could cost them their lives.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of light BDSM.

Excerpt from Rough Around the Edges

Kai looked down at his bound hands. A dark red ribbon held his wrists together, tied off with a small bow. All he needed to do was lift his arms and use his teeth to pull one end of the ribbon then he would be free. But Harry had put the ribbon there. He had wrapped the silky strip of fabric round and round until Kai’s wrists were snug and secure. Now Kai’s hands rested on his bare thighs and he couldn’t seem to pull his gaze away from them. The red contrasted dramatically with his pale skin. It reminded him of ripe cherries. He could almost smell the fruit.

“You’re drifting, Kai. Is this all it takes to get you into subspace?” Harry’s voice broke into Kai’s daydream.

“Oh! Sorry, Sir. I was thinking about cherries.”

“I shouldn’t even ask, but what the hell. How did you get to cherries?”

“The color of the ribbon, Sir.” Kai gave himself a little shake. He needed to concentrate better. He was too easily distracted.

He knelt on a soft cushion, facing the armchair where Harry sat with one ankle resting on the opposite knee. Kai wore only his trunks. The thin layer of bright blue cotton did little to hide his erection. He shivered, not from the cold because the living flame fire in the hearth next to him kept him toasty warm, but rather from reaction to the confusing mix of emotions he was feeling.

“Talk to me, Kai. I want you to describe how you’re feeling in as much detail as you can manage.” Harry leaned toward him slightly, giving Kai his full attention.

Kai tried to separate out in his head all the sensations affecting his body.

“I… Well, I ache, Sir. I’m hard and I want to come,” he whispered.

“What’s making you hard?”

“Being almost naked when you’re fully dressed. Kneeling for you. Being bound. I can’t say it’s just one thing, Sir.”

“Okay, that’s good. What else?”

Kai blinked and looked up at Harry, unsure what to say.

“There’s no wrong answer, Kai. Just say how you feel.” Harry’s smile reassured Kai.

“Well, I feel safe. I know you’ll take care of me. I feel calm and peaceful… Like I don’t have to worry about anything.”

“That’s right. You are completely safe. What about the bondage? Do you like it? Does it scare you?”

Kai looked down at his hands. “Oh… I’d forgotten. I like it…a lot. It’s not scary at all.”

Harry uncrossed his legs and stood up. He walked in a slow circle around Kai then stopped in front of him.

“I want you to stand up. Just like we’ve practiced.”

Kai focused on his body, his limbs. It was much harder than it looked. Not the act of rising and dropping, but making it smooth and graceful. He tensed his muscles and rose in one fluid motion.

“Excellent! That’s perfect, Kai. Well done.”

Kai preened at the praise. Pleasing Harry made his world a wonderful place to be.
