BOOK BLURB:
Long ago, the great Snow Queen died of a broken heart, sending her magical world of dancing snow flakes and glittering icicles into a deep depression. Fearful of the same fate, her subjects sealed their hearts into an icy crystal for safekeeping, hoping to protect themselves and their future. For centuries, the communal Snowheart keeps the snow spirits of the north safe from their emotions, until a mischievous luck spirit steals the mystical crystal, intending to melt it down and extract its magical power at the cost of the snow spirits' lives.
Marmion Roy never dreams of such a frosted, wondrous world until a snow spirit invades his reality, his home, and his heart. Shirai demands his help to recover the Snowheart and annihilate the thieving luck spirit. Because Shirai is void of softer emotion, Mar believes that love with a brusque and literally heartless spirit would be impossible ~ at least until Shirai accidentally is reunited with his own personal part of the Snowheart.
BOOK REVIEW:
Mar is your average college student with nothing special going for him. Lately, he seems to be having a string of bad luck for no reason that started one week ago. His girlfriend broke up with him, something that isn’t really upsetting him, his apartment was broke into and the thief took everything of value, the worst of which was his college books. Nothing is going his way!
Mar arrives home from a horrendous day to be accosted by an ice cold stranger, Shirai, demanding Mar tell him the Heart is hidden. Shirai releases Mar except his hands are frozen to the wall when he realizes that Mar isn’t involved and asks him the strangest question about how his luck has been, which is terrible!
Shirai tells Mar an incredible story about him being a snow spirit and his quest to take back his people’s hearts that were stolen by a spirit of luck. Long ago, their queen fell in love with a human and melted from the heat of her emotions. Ever since, they have removed their hearts, hidden them to protect their people, until their heart was stolen and placed within humans to gain luck for spirit of luck, but gaining the human very bad luck. After his initial disbelief, Mar decides to join forces with Shirai to help him and pay the spirit of luck back. Will Shirai and Mar succeed? Can to such different people find common ground in love?
Ian Sentelik has created a unique story using fantastical characters in a contemporary setting. The plot was smooth as the story unfolded allowing the characters to evolve naturally. I loved learning about how the snow people reacted to their queen’s loss, when in reality what they believed was incorrectly changing their lives until Mar and Shirai meet. It was wonderful how Mar accepted and wanted to help Shirai in his quest, even if one reason was to get back at the luck spirit. I was enthralled with the blossoming love between Mar and Shirai. I will be looking for other books to read by Ian Setelik.
