But when Dean and his new boyfriend, Brad, start dating, things begin to happen. What’s worse is that, after Dean moves in, Brad starts talking to something...something that isn’t even there.
BOOK REVIEW:
Everyone has their own inner demons, some good and some not so good. This is a story about two men, each dealing with their own problems, who find that reality can truly be stranger than fiction. I will leave the reader to decide the reality or fantasy of the story as it unfolds.
Dean was born and raised in a Mormon town that he never considered home. For it to be home, Dean would have had friends and a loving family, none of which Dean had. The torments and ridicule he endured would have been much worst if they had ever learned that Dean was gay. So, at the tender age of fifteen, Dean called his Aunt Patricia in Colorado and she agreed to help him. When Dean turned sixteen, he shook the dirt off of his shoes, climbed aboard a plane and left his home never to return again.
Colorado may not be perfect, but to Dean it holds the hope of a new life, friends and maybe a boyfriend to love him. On his first day, Dean’s life starts looking up when he finds a job and a friend who accepts him for who he is. One day it finally happens. Dean notices a handsome hunk of man in his store and to his surprise this man Brad notices him too. Brad not only tells Dean to smile, but asks for his phone number. Things on their first date go well, even after Brad learns Dean’s age and inexperience. The strange things don’t start until late that night after their date is over. Brad calls Dean, but he forgets he called and is distractedly having a conversation with someone while on the phone with Dean until he abruptly hangs up. Even after he calls back, Dean still can’t get over the how bizarre the entire conversation was. Things between Brad and Dean keep getting better, but occasionally the weird situations crop up. What is happening with Brad? Will Dean and Brad get a chance for happiness or will something or someone get in their way?
Mr. Boye has created a fascinating story with compelling characters who come to life for the reader. I was left questioning the exact problem that was plaguing Brad throughout the story. I wasn’t quite sure and I changed my mind about what was really happening. The love that sprung up between Brad and Dean was beautiful to behold. At times, their love for one another was the only thing that kept them grounded as they found their lives were turned upside down by situations completely out of their control. The story line was incredible as what seemed like dream sequences unfolded, but exactly what they are is in question for much of the story. I loved how the characters are real to life with problems that are easily understood today. This is one book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys strange situations, drama, young love, and situations that are inexplicable until almost the end. Thanks go to Mr. Boye for an extraordinary book!
