BOOK BLURB:
Killian Kendall’s life is changing faster than he can keep up. He’s graduating from high school, breaking up with his boyfriend, and starting a new job with a private investigator. He’s barely settled at his new desk when his ex-boyfriend calls with a desperate plea for help. He wants Killian to prove his new boyfriend is innocent in the shockingly violent murder of his abusive father. Killian reluctantly agrees to take the case, little knowing how complicated ~ and dangerous ~ things will become before it’s over.
On the home front, Killian’s surrogate parents decide to buy a historic mansion and turn it into a bed and breakfast. The house comes with a rich history ... and maybe a ghost or two. Killian doesn’t want to believe in such things, but he’s quickly becoming convinced that something terrible happened to the home’s original owners. The century-old mystery both terrifies and tantalizes Killian. In the end, he may be the only one who can uncover the truth.
BOOK REVIEW:
"All Lost Things" by Josh Aterovis is a wonderful paranormal mystery. This is the third in the Killian Kendall Mystery series. I have not read books 1 and 2, but I never found myself lost or lacking information and felt completely comfortable starting with this novel.
This book is labeled as paranormal, and indeed there are definite paranormal aspects/events; but there is much more to be found here. First and foremost, this is an excellent mystery with bloody crime scenes, red herrings, and characters dying. No one is safe in this story and that leads to quite a roller coaster ride!
Killian Kendall is a high school senior with a grumpy boyfriend. He is in a play at school, considering colleges to attend, and a ghostly friend who may or may not be part of his imagination. Characters are only as interesting as their flaws and choices; thus, at first Killian seems almost too good to be true. However, when he starts making some very questionable choices and showing himself to be flawed, he becomes a fascinating person.
As to the other characters, they are complex and vivid. They add color and excitement to the plot. Deserving of special mention is Caleb, a young man who maybe a wounded angel or a devious devil. He is beautifully drawn ~ contradictory, desperate, needy, intelligent, and angry. One is never sure what to believe about Caleb, and that makes him intensely intriguing.
I had a small quibble with the haunted house story arc, it felt a bit tacked on at the end; but overall this is an excellent mystery and paranormal story!
