BOOK BLURB:
Rafael Hurt comes from Mississippi to play Blues guitar, and he’s hiding a dangerous secret. When a young girl is found murdered during Rafe’s first gig at The Blues Angel, Rafe and Deke Davis, a veteran reporter, have to find the killer before the secrets of the past explode into racial violence and destroy any chance for the love growing between them
BOOK REVIEW:
Washington Post photojournalist Deke Davis wants to spend his investigative time with the hapless Freedom Riders in Mississippi, but instead his irascible editor sends him to The Blues Angel, a black D.C. club which is noted for the three elderly giants of the Delta Blues now appearing ~ with a white man, also a blues musician.
Now in 1966 nobody believes a white man can sing the blues, whether he's Mississippi raised or not, but Rafael Hurt is not just any white boy. Close to the reincarnation of legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, Rafael plays, and looks, like a Blues angel, and Deke is instantly head-over-heels. Rafe falls even faster, but their first encounter is marred by a murder, and Deke's passion for truth may overwhelm his need to keep Rafe's love.
Death of a Blues Angel is an astounding novel from an exceptional author, Sarah Black. With the impact of a freight train, Death of a Blues Angel knocks the reader off her feet from the first sentences and off on the ride of a lifetime, and of a historical period. This story contains accurate historical background about the horrors surrounding the Civil Rights Movement, family bonds, a Southern man's mantle of responsibility, steaming Gay sensuality, romance, and love, and the Blues.
Nothing is missing from this powerfully impacting story which will linger in the reader's memory for years. Not only a recommended read, this is a MUST read-do NOT miss-get this book! From mystery to building suspense, from sexual tension and turn-ons to erotic romance, to history as seen through the eyes of its contemporaries, to family bonds that extend beyond race or class lines, to the development of the musical genre of blues (and the question of whether the blues is germane only to one race) Death of a Blues Angel has it all. I could not put the book down, and will be rereading it often.
