They were known as The Six. There was Howie, the only male member of the group, the narrator Shelby, Carolyn, Naomi, and Melissa and Kara, who were a couple since they were seventeen. These best friends did everything together until a shocking betrayal split them apart. Thirty years later, after Carolyn and Howie have passed away, it's Naomi's wish to heal what remains of The Six.

This novel meditates on loss and healing, but also on love. Love between friends and family members is an important theme, as is romantic love. When Shelby returns to her South Carolina low country home, her life will never be the same. She finds the love of her life in the most unexpected place. Full of heartbreak and tragedy, this novel has a strong backbone of empathy for different points of view. The eroticism is subtle, almost teasing, which works well with Poulter's thoughtful writing style.
