Which is more important? The perfect cup of coffee or the perfect date? Why can’t we have both?
Blaine is an Isherwood reading, photo taking, obsessive compulsive coffee barista who steals money out of public fountains and who can’t find a date. Obsessed with the number 32, his age, Blaine blames his lack of companionship as the reason for his habitual acts. He counts steps, sets his alarm clock at 32 minute intervals, and traces the numbers on his apartment door each time he leaves. Every day is timed and in sync to Blaine’s magic number!
When his best friend Sallie sets him up on a blind date, the overanxious caffeine slinger becomes convinced that Edward, the new man in his life, will cure his compulsions. But when Blaine discovers he has nothing in common with Edward except for their common interest in Isherwood’s writing, complications quickly ensue.
Soon, an artsy tattooed coworker named Auden tells Blaine about a local photography contest, and Blaine sets out to capture that perfect winning snapshot. But just as Blaine thinks he has his illness conquered, his perfect unvarying world spirals out of control when he skips a beat in his daily routine, ultimately making Blaine realize that Mr. Right has been right in front of him the whole time, but just out of focus.
Stealing Wishes is a caffeinated romantic comedy with extra cream and sugar! Blaine’s obsessive outlook on the world is one in which any reader can find something to relate to.

A more true sentence was never written. There are 3 paragraphs that stand out to me as having the most truth to them
1. "Now when someone who you work with, who you’ve seen practically every day for the past eight years of your life, suddenly sits down and wants to know how you are doing, they are really giving you a chance to clear the air. It’s quite possible that they’ve somehow become the center of attention for quite some time, like Sallie has, and now here’s your opportunity to catch them up on your boring life. What she is really doing is giving me time to talk about me, to put the focus on me. It’s my chance to shine right here at the table, to put the spotlight on me and say, “Hey, look at me for a while!” It’s really a cheap ploy to ask me for a favor."
2. "There was a day when I knew nothing about pouring coffee or creating drinks, but I learned and now it’s just second nature to me. I’ve been on dates before, but I still know nothing. No one really does. No matter how many times you’ve done it, each time is still a completely new and frightening experience and you are bound to make mistakes at it."
3. "To me, dating is like a blank canvas. I can paint whatever picture I want. It’s not going to be perfect the first time. It might be bright and cheerful. It might be dark and dreary. If I don’t like it, I can paint over it. And even start over."
Everyone truly can find something to relate to in the story; although the set up of the character of Blaine took a bit long it was worth the effort to get to the halfway point in this story. The slow climb leads to a rapid descent that although cliche in some places is still a good read.
