BOOK REVIEW:
In a world where demons very much exist, it remains to the few dedicated, powerful, able individuals to fight back. Vertigo is a sphere parallel to Earth, populated by sadistic demons who entrap humans for use as slaves. So named because of the sickness common to humans who enter Vertigo, it’s a dangerous world for humans for many reasons. Their only recourse is rescue by someone such as Simon Saint Saens, known underground as The Saint, whose superhuman powers allow him to successfully fight, and destroy, Vertigo’s demons, and to see into the Rift dividing Vertigo from Earth.
One night in the midst of his own emotional pain, Simon had discovered that he could see into the Rift, and found a human male under torture by Vertigoan demons. Killing the demons and rescuing Jared, Simon nursed him back to health, falling in love in the process but denying it even to himself. He packed Jared off to an Abbey, which was later overrun by demons and destroyed, all the inhabitants burnt. Simon can scarcely believe the evidence of his heart and senses when he battles a Vertigoan warg-wolf who proves to be the beloved Jared he thought to be murdered.
Vertigo is a romantic, love-compelled, story of two men who undergo the worst terrors and torments in their search for each other. The deep heart bond between Simon and Jared is fascinating and believable. Their sexual presence is steamy but doesn’t overrun their romantic entanglement and the emotional battles each undergoes as they face the truth about their lives and about each other’s true natures. Author M.L. Rhodes is notable for her ability to reach deeply into the characters, personalities, and sensual natures of her protagonists and Vertigo is a fine example of her talents.
