BOOK REVIEW:
"Cake Walk" by C.B. Potts is a quirky, funny tale of cake come to life.

Joel has entered a baking competition and his cheating, manipulative ex-boyfriend, Rick, is his chief competitor. In his quest to create the perfect cake, a life-size replica of Michelangelo's David, he invests so much energy and life into the cake it becomes real. Of course, this causes all sorts of complications and funny moments.

Joel is sweet, someone you'd enjoy as a friend. He treats his employee with respect and kindness; he goes above and beyond for his customers; he even rescues small birds that have fallen out of their nests. Okay, I made that last part up; but, he is almost too good to be true. It reflects the strength of the author's skills that Joel teeters but never succumbs to being too perfect.

Rick is the perfect nemesis. He is sexy, crafty and manipulative. He uses sex to conquer and influence others. When sex appeal doesn't work he becomes angry and dangerous. He is the type of man you'd have a hot fling with but would never trust with your heart. The reader is never sure if he is telling the truth about his struggling business or what his real motives are. This makes for an exciting villain.

David, aka the Cake come to life, actually works as a character. He is just naive enough, yet sexual enough and completely devoted to Joel to make him seem real. I most enjoyed his snarky comments to Rick; it showed he had a brain and a sense of humor!

The plot is fairly predictable with a few twists at the end, but is well paced and an easy read. Naturally, when one's cake becomes alive, there is nothing to enter in the competition. This is a dilemma for Joel, as he desperately wants to prove his skills and beat Rick. It results in some very good conflicts and surprises. This is an enjoyable read and I recommend it!
