BOOK BLURB:
Jacyn had always considered himself a pretty normal guy. Little did he know that he couldn’t be more wrong. Attacked by a group of gunmen, he suddenly finds himself shot at, kidnapped and chained to a wall. Not exactly the kind of day a normal guy has. All he knows is that all of it is somehow connected to his birth family. Rescued by a tall dangerous looking stranger who claims to have been sent by his long-lost family, Jacyn doesn’t know whether to run with him or away from him. Especially when the stranger claims to be able to shift into a jaguar.
The last thing Logan wants is to be rounding up some stray jaguar shifter, but he has never refused an order. Even as he tells himself the mission will be a snap, he finds himself having to launch a one-cat rescue party when Jacyn gets himself captured by their enemy.
As the two males run for their lives, they find that not only are they having to battle their enemy, but they are also fighting a growing attraction to each other. Passion is the last thing they should be thinking about, however. Because if they don’t keep their attention focused on the enemy, they could very well pay the ultimate price.
BOOK REVIEW:
Stephanie Hecht's "Primal Passions" starts with a huge bang and doesn't let up until the end. This paranormal story about shape shifters is first rate with complex leading men, hot sex, and great story telling.
Jacyn is a sexy loner, raised in foster care and bereft of family. His world is turned completely upside down in a moment; yet his ability to use humor to deal with the experience is an endearing attribute!
Logan is another sexy loner but, unlike Jacyn, he has a huge chip on his shoulder and is out to prove something. He is intriguing with a complicated mix of loyalty, arrogance, and yearning. That he is considered 'the wrong color' of shape shifter was a deeply moving moment; one that the author wisely touches on but doesn't dwell upon. It was enough to show prejudices exist and that they don't have to define a person, rather than beat the point over and over.
Other characters, such as Jared and Kevin aka Dumb and Ass, are vividly drawn with interesting quirks and histories that round out the story. Of note for this reviewer was the secondary character of Rat, an aggressively flamboyant gay shifter with a heartbreaking story. He was equal parts obnoxious, flirty, and camp.
Family issues figure prominently in this tale. Jacyn never knew he had one, Logan was raised on the wrong side of the tracks; Rat was abused as a child; Mitchell has lost most of his relations; etc. There are no easy answers provided, for which I am thankful; yet, there are resolutions for some, and everyone grows.
Overall, this is an excellent adventure and one that fans of shape shifter literature will enjoy!
