BOOK BLURB:
When Bill leaves the college life in Laramie to go back to working on a ranch, he's carrying a good bit of guilt with him. He promised his dead lover Charlie that he'd go to school on the Army ticket, after all. But Bill knows academia isn't for an old cowboy like him. Will a young cowboy named Dalton be more what Bill needs, or will Bill let his past keep him from embracing his future?
BOOK REVIEW:
I love me a good cowboy, and Bill is very good. I liked how he tried for over a year to do what his dead partner wanted, namely to go to school, but eventually a cowboy’s gotta do what a cowboy’s gotta do, and that’s ranching.
It was really cute how Bill noticed things about Dalton, like “how much salt Dalton put on his Frito pie, how loud the kid snored, and how he leaned to the left in the saddle a little when he was real tired.” This tells us so much about Bill’s real feelings toward the man. But Bill refuses to believe that the kid could be interested in such an old man as he. This was both funny and rather sad.
“’I'm queer, Bill.’ It dropped like a hot turd in a punch bowl. Plop.” I laughed out loud at this. Ms. Talbot has a wonderful way with words.
Even though this is a short story, very short, we still get an excellent feel for the passage of time, the growing closeness and mutual respect Dalton and Bill have for one another. Does all of this add up to anything more substantial? Well you’ll have to buy the story to find out.
