BOOK BLURB:
After closing his bar one night, Dave Johnson rescues Kyle, who is on the run after witnessing the murder of a federal agent in San Francisco. Dave knows Kyle is trouble but can't help falling in love; Kyle loses his heart but fears he's bringing danger to Dave's doorstep. When Kyle's pursuers close in, the two men are at an impasse. They can either separate and live in safety and loneliness, or find a way to stay alive and together.
BOOK REVIEW:
The murder of the federal agent, the thing Kyle is running away from, isn’t revealed until near the end of the story. Therefore I think the blurb gives too much away. I’d have much rather been left in the dark until Kyle tells Dave about it. Kyle having a secret is part of his mysterious charm.
Dave is your quintessential hero. He’s broad of shoulder and big of dick, but he’s much more than that. He knows when to be gentle and kind, and when to be strong and dominant. I almost wept at his display of vulnerability when he came home with a Christmas present for Kyle, not knowing if Kyle would still be with him on Christmas Day to open it.
It’s fascinating to learn of Kyle’s past through frequent flashbacks. He’s not had a good, or a fair, life. But he remains strong and independent. I was gripped by how he struggled to accept Dave’s kindness, not being used to such things. I confess to not understanding Kyle’s Goth nature, but thankfully this didn’t go too far. In fact it was rather cute how big macho Dave went out to buy Kyle Goth clothing and accessories. One can only imagine how embarrassing that was for him.
Things got rather dramatic, if a little far fetched. But then it all settled down, giving Dave and Kyle the happiness they deserved. I thought Dave and Kyle made a great couple, I hope you’ll think the same.
