BOOK REVIEW:
The narrative style was incredibly spare, spartan even. “Anger boiled as I realized he betrayed me. Bastard! With a rush of uniforms and a somewhat distant recall of Miranda rights, officers supported me on both sides. In less time than it took to complete a coherent thought, I’d learned the meaning of malevolence.” Not a word is wasted. I approve.

The choice of first person narration gives greater scope for introspection, something the author takes full advantage of. Throughout much of the story, Chas feels angry and confused at being tricked by the system in general and Chris in particular. He lashes out both inside his head and physically. We get a great sense of his swirling emotions as Chas explores the thin barrier between love and hate. His mind is telling him to reject Chris for the trick he played, however his body betrays him as it is all too willing to submit to the dominant man’s ministrations.

Short stories aren’t as easy to write as some may imagine. However, Bryl R. Tyne masterfully handles the genre. I’ll be sure to look out for more from this author.
