BOOK REVIEW:
I’ve never been disappointed in picking up a novel by Rick Reed, and this one is no exception. A story line that could easily have degenerated in the wrong hands is here interwoven into an enthralling plot that kept me flipping pages (not the easiest task in an ebook reader!) Mr. Reed definitely knows the power of the reader’s hook and uses it throughout. I found I could not put the book down, and just when I was heart-in-mouth, discovered the suspense level could indeed be ratcheted higher!
Cass D’Angelo is a small-town waitress, single mother, and Lesbian, whose life is totally devoted to her son. She seldom considers the lover she long ago ejected who had been consumed by substance abuse. Life is difficult, the economy is bad, her mother is critical; but she has a loving father and a cherished seven-year-old boy. In looking for Max during a thunderstorm, Cass is nearly struck by lightning and is bludgeoned by a tree branch hitting her in the head. Almost dead, she is knocked unconscious and recovers to find recent memory blurry and her mind full of all-new concepts: visions of dead girls and of their murderers and their final resting places. When her name appears in the newspaper after she helps a grieving father locate his missing daughter, circumstances heat up and the noose circling Cass tightens as the murderers take steps to insure her silence.
Cass is a realistic character and the center of a cast of characters to whom the reader can be, if not always sympathetic, at least empathetic. Rick Reed is a superb author whose gift at plotting and characterizing mysteries is obvious in Deadly Vision.
