BOOK BLURB:
Shapeshifters. Who doesn't love 'em, whether it's wolves, wild dogs, or spirit guides? The K9 Taste Test has three great tales about the animal within.
In Misa Izanaki's Running Wild, Fen is worried that he's lost Loki forever when he finally finds his lover at the pound. Loki needs more than the city life that Fen is so accustomed to, and Fen needs to find a way to give it to him before it's too late.
In Heightened Senses, by Anah Crow and Dianne Fox, Jasper is sure that he shouldn’t feel the way he does about Sampson, his guide and protector. He finds his shapeshifting friend fascinating, and dreams of a deeper relationship, but will he be able to break the rules?
Finally, in BA Tortuga's Yard Dog, Alex knows he's in trouble when Brandon gets home from his overnight stint in doggie jail. Can he get what he needs, and let Brandon have a little revenge?
BOOK REVIEW:
The first tale, "Running Wild," is a retelling of the classic Aesop’s city mouse, country mouse story. Except here we’re dealing with werewolves. Poor Loki felt hemmed in by city living and needed to get out for a while. He has the misfortune to get locked up by animal control. I felt so sorry for him, the descriptions of his misery in the pound were heart-rending.
I don’t think I’ve read a shape shifter story before where the characters, while in human form, still keep their canine ears and tails. That must present some interesting conversations with their non-shifting friends. Their problems were resolved nicely and it’s so obvious both shifters are very much in love.
in "Heightened Senses," falling in love with one's service animal, when that animal is also human, is an interesting concept. Samson gets to live the role of protector in both his bodies. That’s great. And Jasper gets to be taken care of by both man and dog. This one was by turns a serious, erotic and emotional read. A lot was packed into a comparatively small space. Very satisfying.
"Yard Dog" was an interesting mixture of erotica and romance. It wasn’t altogether clear why Brandon had been put into the yard, or why he ran away. However, Alex rescuing him from the pound was great fun ~ he could tell Brandon was pissed at him, a fact confirmed when he bit Alex in the leg once they were out in the parking lot. However, once home, Brandon was determined to have his wicked way with Alex. The resultant sex, just before the moon rose, was hot and passionate as we have come to expect from B.A. Tortuga. Then in the morning there was some spanking, oh, and more sex. Like I said, this is B.A. Tortuga.
This anthology was a fun read, not my usual choice, but it made for a most pleasant change.
