BOOK REVIEW:
A pleasure slave for the prince Senesret, Tamet volunteers to take the prince’s place as hostage following a sound defeat by desert forces. Tamet thinks that Senesret’s dismay is due to affection for him, but quickly Senesret forgets all about Tamet and is given a new slave by his father. As a substitute royal hostage, Tamet is given a new name and a role in the household by Rahmad, the desert prince who captured Senesret and whose oldest son, had he lived, would be about Tamet’s age.
Rahmad develops an interest in Tamet and over time teaches him much about the ways of pleasure and love in a fashion that had been absent from Senesret’s touch. Eventually, though, Tamet learns to his sorrow of Senesret’s disinterest and must now decide whether to remain with Rahmad and to forget his former life at Senesret’s court.
L.E. Bryce skillfully weaves sensuous m/m intimacy into an absorbing fantasy tale. Although the sociopolitical background and the household caste status are detailed, the reader is not bombarded with information. It’s backdrop as it should be. I found myself quickly turning the pages as I became captivated by the story immediately. Well worth a read, and a good introduction to the author.
